“This is the last circle that I know of, if we keep heading north. My home village is a half day to the east.” Dominic glanced across the fire. “We could borrow another horse and get more supplies. I can find out if others know of more northern circles.”

Important information to have, and if we both rode, we could move faster. But it would mean losing a day or more of travel. What do you think?

He’s our guide. It’s better if he knows of any safe havens.

She was right. I nodded. “All right. Let’s do that. Maybe we can find some boots for me too.”

“I’ll wrap rabbit furs around yours tomorrow, so that no one sees them.” He frowned, rubbing his chin with the back of his hand. “I should’ve thought of that before, but I traded those I had then.”

Leglin had caught a half dozen or so rabbits the past few days. I patted him. “Hindsight’s twenty-twenty.”

“What’s that?”

He’d been understanding most of what I said so well, I’d nearly forgotten English wasn’t his first language. “Perfect vision is called twenty-twenty vision where I come from.”

“Oh. Clever saying.” He grinned.

“Guess it is. Not that I want to insult Cerridwen’s teaching ability or anything, but how did you learn English so quickly? She only taught you for a couple of nights.”

“We learn fast. Have to, so we don’t make mistakes around humans.” His grin had disappeared.

“Oh.” I felt the need to apologize, but didn’t. Logan had mentioned once that it was weird human habit.

“My parents will be happy to meet you.”

Subject change. Thank you. They’d probably be happier to see him and know he hadn’t been eaten by jargs or burned alive. “I look forward to meeting them.”

“Begging your pardon, but I don’t want to lie to them.”

“Huh?”

“I’d rather say you hired me as a guide.”

Oh, right. No pretend marriage for people he was related to. “That’s fine.”

“But we can tell them the truth once we’re alone. Can’t we?” He had a habit of tilting his head slightly right when asking questions. Sort of like a puppy hearing a noise. It should’ve been silly on a grown man, but it wasn’t.

“Sure.”

“They’d know you’re one of us anyway, once they smelled you.”

“Do I really smell that much like tiger?”

“Yes.” His grin was back.

I knew my dogs could smell “animal people” and even tell what sort of shifter they were. “Doesn’t that make travelling here risky? I mean, you could walk into a town and a pack of dogs might go nuts when they smelled you.”

“That’s why we keep dogs ourselves. Female dogs.”

“How does,” I looked at Aeryn, who perked her ears. “Oh. So if strange dogs fuss, people will think it’s because she’s in heat.”

“And no one will think it strange I run the other dogs away.” Dominic nodded.

“Okay. You,” I pointed at Aeryn, “and I are going to have to have a talk when we get back to my world.”

“About what?”

“Uh,” I cast about for a way to explain spaying.

“The new world doesn’t like dogs having many litters,” Leglin said.
